The modern day disaster movie is a work of art from top to bottom. No form of movie captures our imagination quite like the modern day disaster movie, and no movie genre is as cluttered with poor examples. Finding the best disaster movies can be very difficult without some help, so I have assembled the top five right here for your viewing pleasure. Virtually every disaster buff would love any one of these entertaining movies, and they all have different things that make them great.

Here are the top five modern day disaster movies:
Independance Day - This movie is one of the few that mixes comedy well with disaster. The fact that Will Smith plays the hero is a good reason that Independance Day is able to get away with that. The movie is about an alien invasion on a world scale that gets way out of control quickly. The movie features some incredible graphics and movie making, and the cast is stellar from top to bottom. This is one of the best movies in any genre, much less disaster films alone.
Titanic - Titanic is a disaster movie that takes our imagination on a thrill ride. Most people know the story of the Titanic, and the movie does an incredible job of capturing the spirit as we might imagine it of the Titanic and it’s crew. The story is both exciting and sad at the same time, and the visuals are simply breathtaking. You can easily imagine what it might have been like for the Titanic and the people aboard it. True disaster at it’s finest in the movie industry.
Deep Impact - This great flick from 1998 is often overlooked by fans of the genre of disaster movies, and that is truly a shame. It is arguably the best movie on the list. Deep Impact tells of an impending asteroid impact with Earth that is set to obliterate us. The movie moves between the personal stories going on here on Earth as the asteroid approaches, and the men that are sent into space to save us. The scene with the ocean wave is simply breathtaking, and qualifies as one of the most powerful visions of our movie making history.
Armageddon - Though they came out in the same year, and have a largely similar storyline, Armageddon is the big budget version of Deep Impact. They both are fantastic, and they both merit individual credit for bringing a horrible potential threat to the big screen. Armageddon features bigger name actors in Bruce Willis, as well as Ben Affleck, but it is not any better than Deep Impact overall. They both are fantastic movies that stand on their own.
The Perfect Storm - This is a movie that completely took me by surprise. The ocean scenes are simply mind boggling, and the story is second to none in the movie world. The basic premise is that a fishing boat is caught in the middle of a huge storm, that ultimately becomes the “perfect storm”. George Clooney and others do an awesome job of portraying the lives of fishermen and the horrors they sometimes face.
