Oceanographers study issues which affect the ocean, such as global warming, the decline in fisheries, and even pollution. On average, oceanographers earn about $40,000 a year but they can earn as much as $87,000 annually. A Bachelor’s Degree is the minimum requirement. Although some oceanographers earn their degrees in biology or physics, there are many universities that offer Bachelor’s Degrees in Oceanography. Here are the top five colleges for oceanography.
1. University of Hawaii at Manoa
If the idea of studying on a beautiful island appeals to you, then the University of Hawaii at Manoa may be a great choice. The oceanography program that is offered at this university is known to be one of the best in the United States. Tuition is also fairly affordable, at $4,320 for in-state resident and $12,192 for out-of-state students.
2. University of California, San Diego (UCSD)
The University of California at San Diego is another one of the top five colleges for oceanography. Since the University of California is known to be such a reputable college, this is really no surprise. State residents can attend free of charge. Out-of-state students will pay $18,684 to attend UCSD full-time.
3. Florida State University
The best college on the east coast for oceanography is Florida State University. Although there is not a degree that is specialized in oceanography, Florida State does offer other programs which are focused in the field. You can earn a degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or physics with a specialization in oceanography. Those who live in state will pay $3,307 to attend. Out-of-state students will pay $16,439.
4. University of Alaska Fairbanks
If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in oceanography or a related field of science and want to further your education, the University of Alaska Fairbanks may be the best place to do it. The school offers both a Master’s Degree and a Doctoral Degree in Oceanography. Residents of Alaska will pay $6,256. Non-residents will pay $11,908.
5. University of Rhode Island
One of the best Northeastern colleges for oceanography is the University of Rhode Island. Like the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Bachelor’s Degrees in oceanography are not offered at the University of Rhode Island. Master’s and Doctoral Degrees are offered, with a few different program options. The cost of tuition for the University of Rhode Island is about $5,656 for in-state residents and $19,500 for out-of-state residents.
Although it is a good idea to attend one of the top five college for oceanography, it is important to keep in mind that there are quite a few of other universities who offer degrees related to this field. No matter what you decide on, it is important to make sure that you attend a school that suits you well. Be sure also to research the field of oceanography beforehand, as it is a very tough profession.
This list is completely wrong. I go to oceanography grad school and Scripps, WHOI, and Lamont easily are the tops. Who writes this stuff?
