Applying to college can be incredibly stressful. If you received a denial for one of your applications to any school, there could be a number of different reasons that you were not accepted. Here are ten reasons your college application was denied.
1. GPA. Almost all colleges have an average range that your GPA must fall within in order to become accepted. There is a possibility that your GPA simply was not high enough.
2. SAT Scores. Much like GPA’s, colleges have an average range that SAT scores must fall under in order for an applicant to gain acceptance. If the college requires a score that is much higher than what you received, there is a good chance this is why your college application was denied.
3. No extracurricular activities. While you are not required to have extracurricular activities listed on your application, it can make all the difference. The more activities that you list, the more the college is able to differentiate you from other applicants. If you were in high school after-school activities, be sure to let colleges know on your application.
4. Lack of References. Most colleges require students to provide at least two references from a teacher, coach, or guidance counselor. If you failed to provide references or if they did not have many positive things to say about you, this may be why your college application was denied.
5. Essay. Many colleges require students to write an essay. This is really used as a writing sample that says a little bit about your personality. Keep in mind that if your college essay is not very strong or if it is filled with grammatical errors, this may be why your college application was rejected.
6. Application Deadline. If you did not apply to the college before the application deadline, your application will almost always be automatically thrown out. Be sure to find out when application deadlines are. Aim to get your application in weeks before then.
7. Specialized Program. Certain colleges have programs which require higher standards from students than others. If the program that you applied for is one which requires high standards and you actually meet them, someone else may still qualify better for acceptance.
8. Programs in Demand. There are many majors that are in demand by students. Usually, this includes majors in teaching or the medical field. If you either received a rejection or have been wait listed, this may be why.
9. Unsuccessful Interview. Some colleges may require you to attend an interview. This will generally be an ivy league school or a school where you are being considered for scholarships. If the interview did not go successfully, this may be why your college application was denied.
10. Appearance. Some colleges require you to send a photograph of yourself with your application. This once again applies to ivy league universities. If the college does not feel that you fit in with the average appearance of their students, your college application may be rejected. Refrain from sending photographs in which you are wearing risky clothing, have unusually dyed hair or tattoos and piercings that are visible.
If your college application has been denied, keep in mind that there are other options for you. Local universities or community colleges which have less stringent application requirements may be a great place to begin your education.
