College is one of the first times that many students have been away from home alone. These students stay in dorms, which are like little apartments within the campus. Dorm rooms are very basic, but they can be made into a pretty nice little abode with some creativity. Hopefully, you will be paired with a friend, or at least someone that you share interests with. To make a dorm truly like home, there are several things that you need to make sure you bring with you. Here are ten dorm items you must have when you head off to college:
1. Pictures - Pictures of your loved ones will quickly become very important to you when you are aware from home for the first time. Do not bring tons of them, but several nice framed pictures do nicely.
2. Music - Music is such a powerful way to help us relax that having your favorites on hand is an absolute must. Put your CDs in a carry case to downsize the space they take up. Space will be at a premium.
3. CD Player/Alarm Clock - It is vital that you have a device to wake you each morning while at college. If you get a model that also plays CDs then you can listen to your music as well. (Make sure the model has an earphone jack so you can listen without bothering your roommate.
4. Laptop - The Internet has become absolutely vital to any college student, and a laptop gives you flexibility. While certainly there are computers available on campus, you may not always want to leave the comforts of your dorm room to use them.
5. Cell Phone - While this item is actually portable and will help you all over campus, it will be an absolute necessity in your dorm room. You will need it to call home, friends, and even as an emergency phone.
6. Mini Fridge - These little fridges are very valuable to the dorm life. Being able to keep food, drinks, and the like in your room is great for those late night munchies while studying.
7. Bible, Books - If you are spiritual, then you certainly will want to bring along a Bible or other spiritual texts. It also is good to bring along some books that you can read for fun rather than study. Everyone needs a break eventually.
8. Special Blankets and Pillows - Some people simply have to have their pillows and blankets from home. This may extend to sheets, and other household items but do not get carried away.
9. Make-up, Soap, Bathroom Needs - Do not forget to bring all your items to get clean! These are often not provided, and even if they are they will not be what you want. Bring all things of this nature that you need to be yourself! This includes your favorite beauty supplies.
10. Laundry Bag, Supplies - This is often one of the most forgotten items on the list. Make sure you bring a laundry bag, laundry soap, and plenty of fabric softener. It will remind you of home.
These are only ten of the items that you will need when you go off to your college dorm. Spend plenty of time thinking over the rest of the things you might want. Making your dorm feel like home can make the transition much easier, but be careful that you do not go overboard. Dorms are rather small, after all.
