When someone decides to pursue a distance education degree, there are a lot of factors that will determine their success. One of the most important factors in online education degrees is keeping a schedule. It also happens to be one of the hardest things to do. If you go into a distance learning degree program with no plan in place, then you are setting up yourself for failure.
Distance learning degrees are obtained by taking college courses over the Internet, and then meeting on occasion with your teacher or class via online chat or video conference. For the most part, distance learning degrees are obtained through self moderated study, and perserverance. There is no teacher standing over you asking where your homework is, and the support from the school is often quite minimal.
Because of this lack of support and motivation it falls to the student themselves to push for success. Creating a solid schedule for distance learning is important. You do not want all of your study time to be done right in the middle of supper, or while the rest of the family is jabbering all around you.
To get a good schedule going, you must first communicate with your family. Let them know that you are going to need their support. This means that they must leave you alone during your study time, and keep the noise down to a minimum. It is important that you have some quiet time to do your distance learning coursework.
Once you have an understanding with your family, then determine how much time you will need to succeed in your distance learning degree. This time varies from person to person, and you need to be honest with yourself about what you need to succeed. Once you have a solid idea about how much time you need, then you are ready for the next step.
Sit down with a calendar and mark down all the normal things you and your family do that are non-negotiable. There are some things that can not be avoided, such as school, work, and eating. If there are areas where your spouse can pick up some slack, get that help secured ahead of time. Mark down that time each day that you can absolutely depend on for your study time. Make sure this calendar is posted so that the whole family knows.
Also, be sure to mark off some relaxation time. Distance learning is like regular school in that you will not succeed if you burn yourself out. Give yourself time to recuperate.
If you stick to this schedule, and get the help of your family members, then you are set up for distance learning success. Without it, you are asking to get behind and miss out on the benefits that distance learning provides. Be dedicated and consistent and you will have your degree before you know it.
