Is a Degree in Journalism Right For You?

If you are looking for the perfect college major and are not quite sure what you would want to go for, you may have thought about earning a degree in journalism. There are a number of different things that someone interested in a journalism degree can do, but this does not necessarily mean that it is the right choice for you. Here are some of the things that you should be sure to take into consideration if you are thinking about choosing journalism as your college major.

Qualities of the Ideal Journalism Major

Someone who is interested in journalism should possess a number of different qualities. Most importantly, you should have very strong writing and grammar skills. The ideal journalism major should be able to clearly express what they are trying to say. Journalism majors should also have very good communication skills. The reason is because most people who attend school for journalism will have to do an interview with someone at some point. If you are incredibly shy or do not deal very well with people, then this may not be the right career choice for you.

Jobs Available to Journalism Majors

A number of different careers can be pursued by someone who receives a degree in journalism. Journalists often become writers for newspapers or magazines. Many journalists obtain writing positions with online websites. Some may also choose to become freelance writers and work for private clients as they come along or submit their work to print sources. Many journalists also find job positions in editing, broadcasting, photography, and graphic design. Some may work in corporate or management positions. If you obtain at least a master’s degree in journalism, you will be qualified to teach the field at a community college. With a doctoral degree, you can teach at the university level. Since there is always a high demand for college professors, this can be a great choice for those who are interested in journalism.

The Future of Journalism

There is one major problem with choosing journalism as a major. Since most newspapers and magazines have websites nowadays, there is not such a high demand for print articles. Usually, the websites choose a few highly qualified writers. The field of journalism tends to be much more competitive nowadays than it was in the past. Although it is still possible to find positions in the field of journalism, you will need to be a highly qualified individual to earn the top jobs. That said, there are many people who are able to make a decent living in freelance writing.

Journalism can be a great major for the right individual. It is a good idea for you to consider other options which are related to the field of journalism. For example, a degree in Communications or English may allow you to do some of the same jobs but can also help you pursue other positions. Keep in mind that this is not to discourage you from a degree in journalism, however. For the right person, a degree in journalism can really be the right choice.
