How To Save Money On Text Books For College

Every college student knows that the one thing we dread more than anything else is paying those unreal prices for our textbooks. The rising costs of textbooks seem to get higher every single year, and one nearly needs a part time job just to keep up with books alone. On the bright side, there are some things that you can do to save on those text books in most cases. Here are some ideas for how to save money on those text books the next time around:

The first thing you need to do is to visit every single teacher and find out which text book and version is going to be used in the upcoming semester. Most teacher will gladly arm you with a syllabus or at least fill you in on what you will need verbally. Make sure you get the correct version of the text book, or else you will be wasting your hard earned money.

Now that you know the book you will need, you need to go ahead and be proactive in finding it before everyone else does. Go to the current class of users and offer to purchase their books when they finish the class. Usually, these students are going to sell off the books after the class is over anyway, and they likely will take down your number for when they are ready.

Another great place to get used text books are at used book stores. Virtually every college town has them and offers them for a fraction of the cost of new. About the only headache with this method is that they will sometimes have highlight marks and writing in them, but that is not a big deal for the amount of money that you will save. Check several book stores for the cheapest rates.

The Internet is another fantastic source of college text books at a savings. Surf the net for used text books, and you will find no less than twenty different online used books stores that will likely carry your text book. Check as many of them as possible to find the best possible bargain. Be very careful here that you check the version. Also, if you go this route, make sure you do it well ahead of the class to allow for shipping, mistakes, and other things that may happen.

Saving money on text books for college is much easier now than it used to be. There are a number of easy options that can help cut the costs of books for you if you are willing to do the leg work. Make sure that you sell the books that you are finished with as well to offset the cost of your new text books. If you do all of these things, then you should have no problems handling the costs of these text books any longer.

For both buying and selling, CampusBooks.com is a price-comparison tool that searches hundreds of merchants and millions of books to show students the best deals based on their preferences and needs.

Sometimes you can actually get a book for free (or the cost to ship it) at a book swap site such as Swaptree, although it takes some forethought, probably before the semester begins, so that may not always be an option. In most cases I usually search book price comparison sites like Compare-Books for an edition prior to the one required for the course. In most cases, it does not matter one bit. Book price comparison sites will actually search across dozens of websites (including half.com, amazon, etc…) and return a list of the lowest prices.
