School can be a very stressful environment for many students, and test anxiety can make it unbearable. A large number of students experience test anxiety, and not all of them are feeling that way because they were not prepared. While a certain level of test anxiety is expected, some students become so frozen with it that they end up scoring lower than they should. What can be done to help avoid and relieve test anxiety? Avoiding Test Anxiety
The key to avoiding and preventing test anxiety is to build a gradual knowledge of the material. The vast number of people that suffer from test anxiety is because they were ill prepared. An example of this would be a student that spent the entire quarter taking it easy, and now is trying to cram the whole session into the last few days before exams. This will certainly cause test anxiety in anyone.
To avoid this situation, dedicate a specific amount of time each day to study the material. Do not skip these sessions even if the teacher does not require homework. This time will leave you confident and relaxed going into any test. You will not worry about passing and failing.
For those that experience test anxiety under any circumstances, it is a bit more difficult.
The first thing they should do is learn to relax their brain. This technique is best accomplished through meditation. Basic meditation can be learned at most every recreational center across the country, and can even be found online. Ask your doctor where a good class might be found in your area. This will be very beneficial in overcoming test anxiety. In extreme cases, you should speak with a doctor or mental health professional.
Make sure that you are getting the proper nutrition and rest. If you are not eating right, this can cause test anxiety. Lack of sleep is the number one problem among teenage students where tests are concerned. You can be perfectly prepared for exam day, but if you had only an hours sleep the night before, you will have test anxiety.
Once you sit down to the test, your anxiety can be controlled as well. Have a plan of action in place just in case this scenario happens. For example, you should always go through the test and answer the easiest answers first. Many times this will give you enough correct answers to pass without any problems. Once you know you have enough correct, you can often relax enough to answer the tougher questions. You do not want to run out of time before you have answered all the questions that you know the answer to.
If you have always had test anxiety in spite of the fact that you always do well, then chances are you should see a doctor. Test anxiety is a problem of the mind, and can often be treated by someone that is familiar with the mind and it’s workings. Do not be ashamed to ask for help. Speak with your school guidance counselor, as well as the teachers about your test anxiety. Often, they can help you to work through the problem as well.
