A low high school GPA can be a problem when you are applying to college. Almost all colleges have a certain admissions requirement. This means that you will need to earn a certain GPA in order to gain acceptance. Here are some tips on how to overcome a low GPA to get into college.
Ask Your Teachers For Help
Many teachers are more than willing to provide students with additional help if they feel that they need it. Let them know if there is something that you just are not understanding. Try to arrange a meeting to talk with your teacher about ways to raise your grade well before graduation. Asking for extra credit doesn’t hurt but keep in mind that there are some teachers who will refuse to give it out.
Seek a Tutor For Help
Teachers can only do so much when it comes to providing students with extra help. If you really do not understand something, then you may want to think about seeking a tutor for help. Most schools provide them after school. Perhaps you just do not understand the way that the teacher is explaining something and will benefit more from hearing it taught by someone else.
Emphasize Other Great Qualities
When applying to different colleges, one of the best things that you can do if you have a low GPA is emphasize other great qualities about yourself. If you scored well on the SAT’s, have wonderful letters of recommendation, have written an amazing essay, and have a list of extracurricular activities that you have participated in, there is a good chance that you may get accepted to college anyway. Don’t get discouraged just because you have a low GPA.
Consider Your Other Options
It is a good idea to consider your other options when applying to colleges with a low GPA. There is a good chance that you may want to think about applying to a local community college. Not only are community colleges very affordable but they also offer smaller class sizes, which means that you will receive more attention from the teacher. Since most community colleges have little to no admissions requirements, it is likely that you will be accepted to the one in your area. Once you prove that you are able to earn good grades, you can then apply to the college which you are interested in attending.
Getting accepted into college with a low GPA can seem difficult but it certainly is not impossible. Doing your best to overcome your low GPA will help improve your chances of becoming accepted. In the worst case scenario, you may need to consider other options but this does not mean that you cannot eventually attend the college of your choice later on.

I blue it in freshman and sohmore years at FAMU in Tallhassee Florida. I lost my financial aid, but will pay to continue in college this Fall. How can I overcome this and get back into a college anywhere. FAMU said I had to sit out a year. I am ready to buckle down and do whatever it takes to succeed. (I was a good student in High School.) It’s not because I was not academically preapared. I just had too much freedom and therfore, did not spend my time at FAMU wisely. A couple of universities I have contacted told me I had to sit out a year. Is this true for all universities?
