How To Become A Teacher In The US

There are varied requirements you must meet in order to become a teacher in the United States. Some states also have more strict training and qualifications that are required for you to be able to teach on their state. But the general requirement throughout the United States is that you need to have a license to teach in public schools. Generally though, a license is not required for you to teach in a private school. The teaching license is given by the State Board of Education as a rule even though a licensure committee is likewise able to provide the said license.

Teachers are licensed to teach in early pre-school grades, the elementary grades, and the middle grades. Teachers should also be licensed to teach secondary education subjects and special subjects including music. All states require that a teacher had finished a bachelor’s degree and have had some training in teaching. Another requirement is that they should have finished a prescribed number of units in education. In addition, some also requires teachers to undergo a supervised teaching and have finished a prescribed number of teaching subjects. There are also some states that require teachers to have technology training and still some states had set a minimum limit on what your minimum grade point average should be. Meanwhile, some states also have a far stricter rule in their requirements than others, for example, in some states; a master’s degree is a necessity after you had been given a teaching position. You should attain a master’s degree within a specified number of years.

But the overall, the requirements for almost all of the states in America require that you have the basic skills and competencies in your chosen field including your proficiency in reading and writing but most especially in teaching. You should also have the needed expertise and knowledge in your chosen subject. Most schools are now in the process of executing a performance-based system as the basis for the said licensure. This system is an addition to passing the licensure examination in their chosen subject. You should demonstrate proficiency in teaching your subject. And your teaching performance should be acceptable as well. You should also note that some states have reciprocal agreements that lets teachers from one state to become licensed in another if that is what is agreed upon by the local government.

There is a shortage of mathematics and science teachers in most states, because of this problem, some states had come up with a method to entice people with a bachelor’s degree but don’t have the pre-requisite education units to become a teacher. This method is called the alternative licensure programs, this program will enable people with a bachelor’s degree to teach in their major. For example, if you are a math major, you can already become a teacher without any education units if your state implements this program.

There are also other programs that try to fill up some vacancy in both urban and rural areas, and because of this, teachers that had difficulty in passing their licensure programs are provided with an alternative. One alternative is for teachers to take up only the course they failed or lack and they can become licensed. Some states even issue an emergency license if there is a severe shortage of teachers. But for teachers who really need to be licensed, there are other options like taking up a master’s degree in education, taking up this course will grant a prospective teacher a license in teaching.

For vocational teachers, the requirements are almost the same with a regular teacher. However, the criteria for schools to accept vocational teachers lie more on their knowledge and industry expertise. Vocational teachers should also have experience in their chosen field because this is a more important criterion in a vocational teaching job. In some cases, vocational teachers without a bachelor’s degree are accepted if they have the required experience and expertise.

For childhood education, there are varied requirements; some states need their teachers to have an associate degree and still some require their teachers to be certified by a nationally recognized authority. An example of national certification-giving body is the Child Development Associate credential. This is the most common kind of certification for children education teachers.

The challenge I have seen in the seeing the dream of becoming a teacher is that those of us who are busy adults with jobs and families are looking for an educational solution that is possible to fit into such a life. Cost is another concern. If I look at online as a possibility in getting my teaching certificate and degree, then many of my options point to “for-profit” universities that are going to cost me somewhere between $15,000 to $35,000 for the degree. AFter much investigation in looking to a school that would offer both regionally accredited teacher licensure degrees that were NCLB compliant AND NCATE accredited and fit into my schedule and were not out of this world expensive, I found a couple of decent options. Probably the best option was Western Governors University http://www.wgu.edu./education/teacher_certification.asp
They bachelors and masters licensure programs in multiple areas and they are non profit which put the costs inline.

The second decent option was Grand Canyon University http://www.gcu.edu/gcu/
There weren’t as many options here but they too were affordable and online.

Not sure yet where I will jump in but at least I have a much better idea of my options at this point. I hope this might help in some way with others struggles with this issue. Luck to all!
