How to Avoid Teacher Burnout and Stress

Teacher burnout is something that is becoming more common as school budgets get tighter. Teachers are being asked to do more every single day. With these added responsibilities, many teachers find themselves tired and burned out. What can a teacher to avoid this burnout?

The first thing a teacher needs to do is to make their home a sanctuary. No school related tasks or worries should cross into that part of their lives. A teacher should leave all school related things behind, and turn off when they get home. This is easier said than done, but it is still vital to avoiding teacher burnout. If this means staying longer at the school, then so be it. A teacher is better off working late rather than bringing the work home.

Over time, the teacher will come to feel as though home equals rest and relaxation. They do not have to dedicate their home time to their career to be a dedicated teacher. Teacher burnout happens much faster when they have no sanctuary.

Another key to avoiding teacher burnout is knowing how to say no. Many teachers continue to volunteer their time to people and programs even when they are already stretched thin. Time at home is important to being an effective teacher. Though extra curricular activities are important also, it should not come at the expense of teaching effectiveness.

While many teachers that experience teacher burnout bring it on themselves, the current economic situation is contributing as well. Many things are being moved over onto the teacher’s plates due to budget cuts and so on. For this reason, it is important for teachers to go to these meetings and voice their opinions. Many teachers just accept what happens, and do not even exercise their right to speak out. This is one of the reasons that teacher’s pay is so astoundingly low. Not enough teachers, and certainly not the community at large, have spoken up loudly enough. This must change for teacher burnout to be eliminated.

When teachers get summer vacation time, they should use it. Many teachers spend the entire summer planning their next school year. They should get out of town, and relax. They should take a trip across the country, visit a new town, or just relax on the beach. Whatever they do, they should forget about school for a few weeks so that they return to the classroom refreshed.

Teacher burnout is something that every teacher is bound to experience at some point or another. It is a normal part of being a teacher. The important thing is to recognize burnout when it is on the way, and doing what is needed to relax when they are away from school.
