If you are planning to attend college in 2010, one of the things that you are going to need to worry about is paying for it. Due to the lack of aid that is being provided to state-run colleges and universities, many schools are increasing the cost of tuition. This means that you will be likely to spend more in 2010 than you have so far. Here are a few of the different available financial aid options for 2010.
Federal Student Aid
The most common way that students get financial aid is through FAFSA. You will fill out an application that includes information about your parents’ income, as well as your own income. When filling out a FAFSA, you will check which financial aid options interest you. This may include work study programs, federal student loans, and federal grants. Here is a brief description of what each of these financial aid methods are.
Under work study programs, students will be given a position at the college or university that they are attending. Common positions include in the book store and cafeteria. The hours that you put in working at the college will be counted as college credit money. Based on need and what the college offers, you may earn a little more for spending money. Some colleges offer full work study programs, in which working a certain number of hours per week will provide students with entirely free tuition.
Federal student loans is money that covers the cost of tuition, which needs to be repaid by the student. Keep in mind that there are a two main options when it comes to federal student loans. Subsidized student loans do not begin accumulating interest until you begin repaying the loan, whereas unsubsidized student loans do develop interest while you are attending college.
Federal grants are a much more favorable option in comparison to student loans, if you qualify for them. Grants are money that is paid to the college by the government for a certain percent of your tuition. The amount is based on need. Unlike student loans, federal grants do not need to be repaid by the student as long as he/she complies with certain terms, which are based on academic performance.
Private Bank Loans
If you do not qualify for federal student loans, then it is important to keep in mind that there are other options available for you to choose from. Most banks offer student loans to students. You can also choose to take out a private bank loan to pay for your education.
Scholarships
If you have never thought about applying for a scholarship, it may be a good idea to do so. There are many different organizations, high school districts, colleges, and other places that offer scholarships. Keep in mind that there are scholarship programs offered for everything, ranging from artistic and athletic abilities to being left handed or having blue eyes. Most scholarships only require you to write a simple essay. It is also a good idea to apply for scholarships that offer lower amounts of money, as they may not get quite so many applicants.
As you can see, there are many different financial aid options for 2010. Whether it is your first semester of college or your last, it is never too late to apply for financial aid. You may be surprised at what type of financial aid you receive.
