Getting a great college education is becoming something that is almost a necessity in this world of down economies and competitive work environments. Finding the financial aid that you need to accomplish that goal of a great college education can also be trying. Most people know about the usual suspects in the financial aid arena; loans, grants, and the like. What many people do not know are their are a number of creative resources where financial aid is concerned. Here are five great ways to get financial aid for your college education.
1. Your Job - Many future students are not even aware of the financial aid resources at their jobs, and many bypass the option without even knowing it. Many larger major companies offer tuition assistance to their employees, though most do not advertise it actively. Part of this is due to ignorance, and part of it is probably due to cost. Whatever the case, investigate your job to see if there are financial aid options anywhere to be had within the company. Even if they only help with subjects that are job related, you can still use those for electives within your college major.
2. Industry Leaders - What field are you planning to go into? Once you know this, you can blanket your industry leaders with letters of interest. Let them know that you are interested in their company and what you are planning to do with college. Sometimes, a major company will invest in a potential future star in exchange for their services after school. Get your name out there early, and do not be afraid to ask and inquire about financial aid possibilities.
3. Contests - There are more financial aid contests out there than you could possibly enter. Still, you should try and enter every single one of them that are free. This is free college education money here and you can really rack up over time if you start sending off entries early. You can find these online, in print, and around your town as well.
4. Family - Your family is most certainly a resource and most people realize that. Some families, of course, do not have these resources. Still, most people have at least a distant relative that might consider helping out in some fashion, especially if they are wealthy. Dig into your family tree a bit and see if anyone else in the family has been in your field. If so, then talk with them about where they got the financial aid needed to succeed. They are sure to be able to give you some tips and pointers, if not financial aid itself.
5. Overseas Sources - There are a number of overseas schools or organizations that will pay your way to college if you are willing to meet certain requirements in their Country. If you are the adventurous type, or you simply love to travel, then this option might be a good one for you. Look into these types of financial aid carefully, however, and be sure you know what you are signing up for before committing.
Financial aid is not that hard to find if you are willing to work for it and look around. You sometimes have to give something in exchange, but that is the spirit of our lives on a daily basis. If you are creative and are willing to work for it, financial aid is still available to everyone even without that elusive scholarship.
