One of the most important things to consider when it comes to being a great student is the atmosphere where you do your homework and your studying. Whether you are a first grader or a senior in college, your homework area should be set up for success. Homework and studying takes concentration to be truly effective in any way, and a bad atmosphere will ruin the best of good study intentions. Here are some fantastic ways to create the perfect homework atmosphere and study area for your future success:

The first and most important thing is that you be somewhere that is private and away from all the hustle and bustle. Unless you have a room mate in college that is good about studying at the same time you are, then chances are the dorms are not a good place. Try under a tree out in the sunshine, or in the back aisles of the school library. If nothing else, you should be able to have some quiet there with limited interruptions. If you are a high school student, or otherwise live at home, then you might consider a secluded room where nobody will likely bother you.
The next thing you will want to do is to gather every supply that you are likely to need before you begin. Many students will wait for each step of a home work assignment and then stop and go hunting for the supplies that they need. Read the assignment, and gather the needed materials before you begin so that you do not stop. Stopping for any reason breaks your train of thought, and opens up the possibility of distractions.
Turn off all cell phones, pagers, televisions, radios, and any other potential interruptions before you begin studying. The silence is something that you need to get used to, as it is the optimal way to get great results. If you can not work without some noise, then opt for a CD of waves crashing on the shore or other soothing sounds that do not have words. These types of music are not nearly as invasive, and they will not make you stop to begin singing when your favorite song clicks on.
Make sure that you are comfortable when you study. Many people sit in a very uncomfortable position when they study, and it can certainly cause you to lose focus. Get some pillows under your rear, and a place to rest your feet when the need arises. Do not, however, make it so comfortable that you desire a nap over studying. That is a trap as well for good study habits.
If you follow these simple rules to studying effectively, then you will find yourself in control of your schoolwork, and breezing through your home work every day. It is all about setting the right mood and atmosphere, and eliminating all the things that make you stop and go throughout the study session.
