When selecting courses for college, many students make a common mistake. They opt for schedules that are much too challenging for them to handle. This an especially common problem among first year students. Choosing the right course sequence each semester can help prevent college from being a nightmare, however. Here are some tips for choosing a well balanced college schedule.

Select an Easy General Education Course
The course which will be easiest for you is ultimately going to depend on your academic strengths. Many people find that this is a course that they enjoy. English or history are very common examples of subjects that students generally do well in, and that are also required at some point. Choosing a course that you are pretty sure that you will be able to do well in is a good idea.
Select a Challenging General Education Course
Most college students do not want to have to take challenging courses, but it is important to keep in mind that this is going to be required of you at some point. Taking a course in a subject that you are not good in, along with the easier course that you have taken so far, is a good idea. Whether it is in a foreign language, math, or science, a more challenging course will balance out your schedule a bit. Remember that it is a bad idea to take more than one challenging course during one semester if you do not need to, so spreading them out among multiple semesters can help you do better.
Choose a Required Course For Your Major
If you are a photography major, it is likely that you are going to need to take introduction to photography before you can take other photography courses. Most schools offer courses in your major at the 100 level, as you will need them to take 200, 300, and 400 level courses. The sooner that you get started taking courses in your major, the more you will be able to take in the future. Since you are choosing to pursue a career that is related to these courses, it is likely that you will find these courses easy.
Select a Course That Counts as an Elective
If at all possible, you will want to select an elective. These are courses which are not usually in your college major. Taking an elective course can help prevent you from not being able to take electives later on. Choose an elective in a subject that you would like to take more courses in during the future, or even in an area that you may want to minor in.
Most college students should start out with four classes per semester. Keep in mind that if you are planning to take a fifth class during your first year as a college student, it may be a good idea to take a fitness class. Getting this course over with early will help you adjust to the amount of class work that is going to be required of you as a college student. Thinking ahead now will get you that much closer to graduation!
