Animal Science Projects
Second graders are particularly interested in animals. There are many interesting science project ideas which involve animals. If you are doing experimentation, think about collecting a few ants. Find out what type of foods they gravitate towards more: healthy (such as lettuce) or sugary (such as donuts). This is an easy experiment to perform. Other science projects that involve animals could be determining why animals have hair or scales, differentiating between different animal noises, and seeing how several students’ pets react when seeing themselves in the mirror.
Gardening Science Projects
Science projects that involve gardening can be really educational for second graders. There are a lot of steps involved in the process and it will really help them understand the environment that they live in. Set up several gardens, in which you control the different elements. Some of them should receive more water, while others receive more sun, and allow the students to see what happens. Let the 2nd graders see the effects that sun and water have on seeds as they grow into plants. If you can, try to have them compare the ways that the human body is similar to a seed.
Food Decay Project
A project that most 2nd grade students are sure to love is the food decay project. With this project, students will monitor food in order to see what makes it decay the most quickly. Some of the different factors that you can monitor include heat, light, and water. Have the students write in a journal how the food smells and looks every day.
Egg Drop Project
One of the science projects that second graders will have the most fun with is egg drop projects. With this project, students will need to make an airplane that will hold an egg. Students will all create their own airplanes, using various materials. Then, all of the students will drop their airplanes out of the window in order to see which eggs will break and which ones won’t.
As you can see, there are quite a few science projects that will be very educational and fun for second graders. Imagine having children throwing eggs out windows or watching seeds as they grow every day! What’s great about these 2nd grade science projects is that they are a great option for almost any group of students.
