Patriot Day is a holiday that many people do not even realize was enacted into law by President George Bush in December of 2001. This day is held every year on September 11 to remember the victims of the horrible terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centers, Pentagon, and airlines in 2001. Many people lost their lives that day, and the tragedy was given the day by Congress on October 25, 2001. The proposition was signed into law on December 18, 2001 by George W. Bush.
While many people are aware that the day is one of rememberance, they often refer to it as 9-11 or any number of other names. The name Patriot Day is a bit controversial, but that is the name of the celebration in official terms.
Patriot Day is a time when we remember the tragedy that befell our nation, and the people that were lost on that day. The World Trade Center attacks were not the only ones. The Pentagon was attacked, and yet another plane also was diverted by heroic Americans and crashed into the ground rather than crashing into whatever horrible target the terrorists had in mind.
Patriot Day is a day when we observe a moment of silence at 8:46am on September 11, which was when the tragedy of September 11 began. Throughout the day, the White House flys the American Flag at half staff, and Americans all over the Country put out flags as well. The United States is joined by many of her allies on this day. It is nice that this holiday is not reserved only for Americans, but for any country that stands against terrorism.
What is ironic is that their are a number of people that take issue with Patriot Day. They feel that this gives the terrorist exactly what they were aiming for. Any person that was around when the September 11 attacks took place can attest to the fact that many Patriots were evident on that day. Not only the emergency personnel, but the average everyday American as well. People traveled from all the way across the United States to help out with the recovery, and the Country stood together in a way not seen since possibly the last World War.
Patriot Day is often confused with Patriots’ Day which is a celebration of the Battle Of Lexington. This is a holiday that is celebrated in the Northeastern part of the country in rememberance of the American Revolutionary War.
Patriot Day is quite simply a memorial to the victims of the horrible tragedy that was 9-11. Not a a single American was left untouched by the tragedy in some way, and even all these years later the Country and the World are still stung by it. Terrorism continues, and the Country still suffers, but the victims of 9-11 are remembered every day in our country. Many security measures were put into place due to the attacks, and they continue to this day.
