Tips for Being a Great Host

Don’t we all love it when we are graciously accepted into someone’s home for a weekend away, and while expecting just a roof over our heads and meals we are given a cozy and comfortable home away from home? Or when simple things are done for us like finding a basket of sweets and goodies are placed on our beds upon our arrival? It is the thoughtful little things that our hosts do for us that make our stay very memorable, and in the process we are endeared to our hosts. People always remember when they are well-received.

tableAt some point in our lives, it will be our turn to accept guests into our home; friends, friends of friends, or relatives who are visiting from out of town. Even if it will be your first time, there are some simple things you can do during their stay that will make you a gracious host, and in the process even enrich your relationship with your visiting guests.

1. Ahead of time, contact the guest so you can ask what food they eat. If they have special requests such as vegetarian meals, you can prepare ahead of time and give recommendations on nearby restaurants that serve the foods they love.

2. Prepare toiletries and towels for use during their stay. If you want to go the extra mile, you can use a little basket you have at home. You don’t need to spend a lot for this; unused toiletries that you acquired from previous hotel stays would do just fine. Make sure that there is enough closet space in the room they are staying in.

3. Write or print out a list of places that may interest them during their stay, including how to get there, and transportation options for them. This way, your guests can do their own thing and entertain themselves while you are away at work.

4. If your guests give you a thank you gift or want to take you out to dinner, let them, and show your appreciation. It means you are doing a great job as host.

5. Never forget to always smile; nothing is more awkward and uncomfortable than feeling that people are forced to accommodate you.

6. Offer your guests some magazines or books that they can read in bed. If you have books you finished reading years ago, tell your guests they are free to take these home with them if they want to finish the book.

7. When planning out their room, take into consideration their religion, favorite color, and little details that go a long way.

If you follow these simple tips, you are sure to have a wonderful time with happy guests. They will be ultimately grateful for being received and treated the way you have, and as they leave, offer them a chance to stay another time. If you’re planning a trip you may even be able to stay with your former guests and expect to be treated genuinely well.
