Some of the best first dates take place over a movie and dinner. Movies provide a safe, public venue with its own provided entertainment making them an ideal no brainer for a first date. However, when it comes to picking the ideal film for a first date is where many of us fall flat. Selecting the proper movie for a first date is more crucial than one would give merit. Choosing the wrong movie for a first date can prevent you from being able to land that second date.

When selecting the movie for a first date, there are several factors to take into consideration. A first date movie should be no longer than 120 minutes and generally a comedy or thriller. Under no circumstances would you want that film to be anything that could distract you from your date. For clarification, no hotties, no overdone plots. You want a first date movie that will pretty much serve as background noise. Nothing much more than that… Despite the fact that you are at a movie, the fact remains you are still on a first date and building a potential relationship. You still need to be able to pick up on your date’s body language cues. Being too absorbed in a movie can prevent you from being capable of doing such.
Bearing this info in mind, these are the top five first date films.
1. Garden State - This film was funny, charming, and somewhat forgettable. Zach Braff and Natalie Portman star in this Sundance Festival indie film. Garden State revolves around Andrew Largeman (played by Braff) and his homecoming prior to his mother’s death. This movie is an ideal selection for a first date film as it is funny and romantic yet not so involved that your date would be ignored.
2. Grosse Pointe Blank - John Cusack, the master of the romantic comedy steps it up a notch from his typical boy meets girl film. Cusack plays a hit man by the name of Martin Blank that decides to return home for his high school reunion and the prom date he stood up-yet dreams about obsessively. This film is a brilliantly written dark comedy with just the right amount of action. Perfect pairings for a first date movie.
3. The Exorcism of Emily Rose - This movie is perfect for a first date as it is boring enough to perhaps land you some make out. Seriously, this movie is creepy enough to get your date’s attention while slow enough to converse, or again, make out.
4. Iron Man - Iron Man features a great action thriller plot with a tremendous helping of special effects. However, the plot is fairly slow making it easy to pick up your date’s signals. Iron Man makes a surprisingly great first date movie.
5. Valkyre - Valkyre is fairly good as a first date movie as it is fairly boring. Well acted and a relatively decent amount of effects, but not the greatest movie ever. Valkyre represents the background noise I referred to earlier.
Films like these make great first date movies. By combining these ideas with your charm on a first date, you should definitely get that all important second date.
