The fourth of July is right around the corner and people are starting to make their plans. Along with those plans comes a number of concerns and safety issues. The fourth of July is often a great big party, and one needs to consider the dangers that this can entail. Here are a number of considerations for how to stay safe on the fourth of July:
The first thing you need to consider is that people will be drinking. As much as society tries to control it, this also means that some of these people will be driving under the influence. As you travel to each fourth of July activity, make certain that you keep your eyes and ears open for this criminal activity. If you notice someone driving erratically, then move as far away from them as possible and call the authorities. Consider all drivers around you as a potential threat, and be cautious.
Drinking also can be a bad mixture at fourth of July parties. If you are having a fourth of July party, consider having an alcohol free party. If you must drink, make it very clear that their is a limit to what you will put up with. If you see it coming, deal with the problem before it begins. If you are attending someone elses fourth of July party, then remove yourself if you feel threatened.
Another common fourth of July safety issue is centered around the grill. With so many people running around, accidents can happen very easily. With this in mind, make certain that you make a “no enter zone” around the grill. This is particularly true for kids that are attending the party. If you keep everyone away from the grill except the chef, then you can avoid most problems. Make certain you are careful with the lighter fluid, however.
Of all the fourth of July safety issues, fireworks presents the most challenges. When amateurs set off fireworks, problems are sure to follow if you are not very careful. For this reason, consider the following safety precautions for your fourth of July fireworks:
- Never set off fireworks in tandem unless you are a professional.
- Always read the directions fully before setting off fireworks.
- Never let children set off fireworks.
- Always assume that “dud” fireworks are still live, and if they do not go off as planned, douse them with water from a distance before approaching.
- Never use fireworks for anything other than intended. For example, do not use bottle rockets to play tag with your buddies.
- Always make sure that the fireworks have a clear path, and will not go into trees, etc.
- Make certain everyone is plenty clear of the fireworks launch area before setting them off.
Fourth of July safety is really just a matter of common sense. If you take care to use that common sense, then you will have no problems aside from the occasional accident. Enjoy this fourth of July, but make sure you do it safely.
