Planning Your Wedding Color Theme

It’s the most important day of your life, and the color theme you choose can make or break the mood. Color is that powerful and has an effect on people, so selecting the right color for your wedding is important. The color will affect the bridesmaid’s dresses, flowers, lighting, and other decorations. It’s not that difficult to do, simply turn to your surroundings for inspiration. Remember to choose one color as a dominant theme, and another complimenting color.

weddingcolorStart with the season, because the time of the year you hold your wedding will either contrast or complement the colors you choose. Weddings are most popularly held during the summer, where bright, happy colors suit the season. The sun is out and flowers are in bloom, so you might want to take your cue from the colors of the flowers. In selecting a dominant color, you can choose bright colors such as turquoise, orange, pink, purple, and green, and a pastel color for the complimenting color.

During autumn, the colors you will find around you include red, copper, gold, burnt orange, and mustard yellow. White, off-white, and ivory make a stark contrast against these colors yet form a beautiful complement. Other colors you can choose from include terra cotta and brown, again colors derived from the environment.

The colder months of winter bring about softer colors of gray, ice blue, and silver, which make a wonderful contrast against deep red, burgundy, midnight blue, and forest green. Gold is also a popular choice during winter because of the festive mood, although gold complements almost every color in the color wheel.

Springtime brings about fresh, new blooms. It is also the perfect time of year to use pastels to your heart’s content. You can choose two contrasting shades of pastels, but be sure to consult the color wheel to guide you in selecting the appropriate colors.

You should also consider the time of day when the wedding will be held. Don’t be afraid to use brighter colors if your wedding will be held during the day, and darker colors for night time. The location is likewise important; for example, if you are having a beach wedding, you would want to choose colors that complement the color of the sand, sky, and ocean. These can be silver, bright tones of yellow, green, purple, pink, and red. Garden weddings already would already provide you with a dominantly green background, so you would probably want to opt for soft shades of blue, pink, purple, yellow, red, and orange. Indoor weddings give you a canvass and limitless possibilities, as you can decorate the walls with the color of your choice. Either indoor or outdoor, the flowers can accentuate the theme you select. You can also opt to soften up the overall theme by using flowers of lighter tones.

The most important thing to remember when choosing a color theme is that it should reflect your personality as a couple. Both you and your spouse’s inputs are crucial to coming up with a great color theme for the most important event of your lives.
