Kingdom of the Pretty

They say all is fair in love and war. Is it really? When there’s a duel among parties, do both start in equal footings?

In love, even if it’s always said that what’s within is what matters, it’s the prettier ones that are selected first by hunters to prey on. When looking for a partner, it’s the physical aspect that is first considered for one to be a “potential.” First is the look: the face or the built. If one passes these criteria, it’s only then that the search for the inner beauty begins. Hardly is it the other way around where one tries to get to know an ugly person better to look for her inner beauty. All is not fair in love then, the pretty ones get the pole position while the less outstanding ones have to work extra hard to be considered.

beautyIn corporations, when there are postings for a new position, which weighs more: credentials or the face value? If it’s really the credentials, there why is there a need to attach a picture on the Curriculum Vitae? There’s no doubt that educational background counts and previous experience are taken note of. But in a situation where two candidates are equally qualified, the better looking one usually gets vantage point for their “extra charm” that can be useful to get messy things done.

Beauty after all has this magical power of mesmerizing people. It can bedazzle authority momentarily, opening doors that are impossible to crack by ordinary ones. For some, it causes temporary insanity, where bad judgments are made in lieu of pleasing the object of their affection.

With this extraordinary power of beauties to breakdown walls and puppet around individuals, everyone else either wants to be one or to be with one. And the more beauty is aspired for, the more powerful the beautiful ones become.

In this day and age, it’s a good thing that medicine and technology are advancing to help the facially and physically challenged ones to improve their looks. Today, beauty can be bought. It can be restored, and it can be sustained too. The price placed on beauty products can go crazy, but there are crazier ones who actually go for it. For them, the power and the personal satisfaction is enough return on investment. Can a look of awe and bemusement be prized? Triggered smiles and heads turned as one passes by are priceless moments.

In the Greek Mythology, Helen of Troy was claimed to possess a face that sailed a thousand ships. War was launched to claim that beauty. Can one really say that all is fair in love and war? From a thousand years ago it has already been said in all the stories, even in fairytales such as the ugly duckling, whose existence was only acknowledged when she transformed into a graceful swan. This world is the kingdom of the pretty, where they call the shots and have the first hand on their destiny. The rest only pick up on what’s left, or what they can get from them pretty ones.
