How To Detect Counterfeit Money

In what has to be one of the most ridiculous crimes in all of history, a South Carolina man tried to open a bank account with a fake million-dollar bill. The man, Alexander Smith is 31 years old and tried to open the bank account with the funny money on Monday, November 26, 2007. This isn’t the first time that someone has tried to open an account with fake money. However, there is only one problem that Alexander Smith failed to take into consideration. The largest bill that has ever been printed is a bill for $100,000. There has never been a million dollar bill printed.

Knowing the difference between counterfeit and real money is a very important part of everyday life, however many fail to tell the difference. Those who work in any field that exchanges currency should be able to tell the difference between real and counterfeit. Lately, there has been an increase of new bills, making those who are aren’t adequately trained in detecting fakes even more confused. The United States Secret Service has a section on their website that will help citizens learn the difference between counterfeit and real money. According to the United States Treasury, it is important to note differences when comparing bills, rather than looking for similarities. When you detect the differences, you have a greater chance of identifying the counterfeits from the real thing.

Another point made by the Treasury is that when you view a picture or portrait on a real bill, the picture will look raised vivid and lifelike. In counterfeit bills, the portrait is often dull or drab and doesn’t appear like a real image. Basically, you will find that with counterfeit bills everything will appear dull, drab, uneven, or mottled. The real bills will look clear, crisp, vivid, and be evenly spaced.

In addition to the markings on the bill, you can also determine counterfeit from genuine bills by the paper that the bill is printed on. When you have a genuine bill you will find that both red and blue fibers are actually embedded within the bill. This is in contrast to the counterfeit bills that try to recreate these fibers but do not have the capabilities of embedding them within the paper. With counterfeit bills, the red and blue fibers are actually printed on the surface of the bill. By studying these fibers and the way they are embedded in real bills, you can detect counterfeits more easily.

The site also describes a very common form of counterfeiting that doesn’t involve using a printing press or computer. This form of counterfeit involves cutting off corners from larger bills and affixing them to the corners of smaller bills. In this manner, you can take a corner from four separate ten, twenty, or hundred dollar bills and affix them to the corners of a one-dollar bill. However, it should be realized that this type of counterfeit is just as serious as any other and the penalties for those who create these altered bills is just as severe. To find out more about counterfeit money and how to determine genuine bills from fakes you can visit the United States Secret Service Site. Maybe if Alexander Smith had visited the site, he wouldn’t have tried to pull such a stupid stunt.
