Perhaps nothing strikes fear into the hearts of people more than a serial killer. Serial killers are people who murder three or more people over time. It is generally estimated that in the United States, there are at least 20 and as many as 50 serial killers actively patrolling our streets in search of victims. Active serial killers can be difficult to identify for any number of reasons.
One of the primary reasons that active serial killers go uncaught is because a great many of them have learned to pick victims that are not easily identified. In some cases, nobody even notices that they are gone. Transients, homeless, and prostitutes often lead the type of lives that can leave them at risk with serial killers. The Green River Killer was successful in this way for decades.
Given that a great many of these types of active serial killers are never noticed or caught, the numbers could even potentially be higher. Trying to estimate something such as active serial killers is far from an exacting science as there are simply no effecive ways to know. Still, FBI experts and police officers around the country are constantly seeking out ways of telling.
The numbers seem to be on the upswing however for active serial killers. In the eighties, the typical estimation was much lower. Some of this could be due to advances in forensics as well as more knowledge of how serial killers operate. Time has not eliminated the serial killer, nor has the incredible advances in understanding them. It seems that as soon as one is caught, that two more take their place.
Another surprising note about active serial killers is that they are prominent throughout the world. Places that once were largely crime free are now seeing serial murder for the first time. As such, it seems sometimes as though no place on earth is safe. The truth is, it is still highly unlikely that you will ever encounter an active serial killer. Even if you did, the chances that you would become a victim are slim unless you are living an at risk lifestyle. It happens, but not very often when you consider the number of people in the world.
Active serial killers are now an unfortunate part of our lives here in the United States and abroad. Keeping ourselves safe from serial killers is really just a matter of common sense. Do not go out alone into dark areas. Keep your home properly locked, and install alarms. Common sense is the order of the day to avoid active serial killers. The truth is, some active serial killers are impossible to predict. They are masters at hiding their “dark side” and this is exactly what makes them such scary men and women.
The days of leaving our doors and windows unlocked are long over with. Active serial killers, rapists, burglars and various other criminals have made this a thing of the past.
