Your hair is definitely your crowning glory, but sometimes it can become too much of a hassle making it look gorgeous, or even decent looking. For the lot of us blessed with curly hair, there are a lot of styles available – that much is true. But just like a quirk of fate, some of the styles we want do not seem to want us (happens all time,) and those that we think we can really pull off turn to disaster when the opportune moment arrives.
We are talking about naturally curly hair here. The type of curly hair we have plays a critical role in the hair style that we should get. Some of us have thick, very tight ringlets; while others have loose curls made of fine strands of hair. And then there are those stuck between thick and fine strands; and between tight curls and loose ones. As curly haired species, we can always go for more curls or less. However, as a hair care tip, make sure that when you change your ‘do, you change it at least a couple of months before your last hair treatment. Oh yes, we know all about the hair care treatments curly people have to undergo: the hair straightening routine, the excessive blow drying sessions, even perms that we thought we needed.
One current trend that we see now is curly haired celebrities sporting long locks. This is actually great if you have medium to fine hair strands and can hold curly ringlets without sticking out like needles on a pincushion when the wind blows. The shape of your face should also dictate just how tight your curls should be. Long, leaner faces will do well with very tight rings that would cascade well beyond the shoulders. Rounder faces should have soft, loose curls to soften the curves of the face.
For those of us with really, really thick manes, we could always go to the saloon for a slight trimming to ease down the volume, and not the length of our hair. This means that you should ask your hairdresser to take more weight off the top of your head. This way, we do not have to have that pyramid shaped hair, and that the curls we have looks more natural from the back.
Putting on hair conditioners is essential for this type of ‘do. Longer hair looks better if there is that shine to it, and with a curly top, this is more than necessary. We also recommend adding highlights to your ‘do. Blondes would benefit well from that sun-kissed look; red heads would need both darker and strikingly light contrasts; brunettes and black haired people should have a few light strings here and there. This is to break that monotonous vision of one mass of curls.
For people who would prefer shorter (shoulder length to boy cut) ‘do, highlights would also work well. The trick to a shorter curly ‘do is to keep the hair framing your face – not hide it, overwhelm it, or be so (what’s a good word?) positively attention-grabbing that it’s like a huge walking head piece. I mean, what’s the point of having all the crowning glory when no one can see the one wearing the crown? Just remember, curls rule!
