The punk revolution has really hit an all time high. More than just the music itself, the music of punk has really managed to etch itself into every listener especially among teenagers. Nowadays, punk has gradually evolved into something more than angst-ridden music. These days punk is more popularly known as “emo” which is slang termed for the “emotional music” genre which have appeared lately. Punk music used to be more general in terms of its lyrical content, mostly focusing on how a teenage life can be too difficult and how so many pressures can be all too much at once.
Emo music was the evolved form of punk but it focuses much on relationships and the “emotional” side of an adolescent or even life in general. Since kids’ hormones tend to go on overdrive during such a phase, it doesn’t come as a surprise why emo music immediately drew in lots of fans. Before anyone can even point a finger at it, emo has spurned from more than just music and into a lifestyle—something which tries to incorporate everything that it can possibly incorporate.
Among the other possible outlets of emo music can be seen through the hairstyles. Emo kids have become identified with the usual black hair with a bunch typically covering either the left or the right eye of the person. But this is not to say that this is the only emo hairstyle available. It can be said that this actually belongs to the biggest misconceptions of the emo culture. An emo hairstyle is not just limited to the black hair put on a sideways style. It is actually freer and people are given the chance to express themselves accordingly. When it comes to this particular hair culture, there really are no limits and no bounds. Wearers are expected to dress themselves up according to how they really feel.
However, emo hairstyles are generally done in an asymmetrical fashion. This means that jagged or even soft shaggy versions can be expected on the wearer. By default, emo hairstyles come out as jet black hair. This is also the reason why most people who display the said look go as far as actually dyeing their hair black. People say that the black color is attributed to the gloom which the music brings. However, emo hairstyles are also flexible enough in terms of highlights. Although a jet black hair serves as the basic canvass, kids usually add bold highlights in bright colors to accentuate their hair.
Highlights are actually the highlight of an emo hairstyle. The more vibrant, the better. When you have a darker base of hair, brighter and bolder highlights are advisable such as purple, red, or even white. This vivid contrast is among the defining things of the emo hairstyle. In addition, emo hairstyles usually do not use any form of hair accessories. People who fashion this look simply let their hairs hang loose, even covering their eyes most of the time. Because of this, the emo hairstyle has been classified as more carefree, at times even considered as messy.
