David is one of the most beloved men in all the Bible, and with good reason. Perhaps no other person in the Bible save for Jesus Himself went through as many trials and tribulations as David. Like most great men, it was not his trials and tribulations that made him so beloved. It was the way he dealt with those trials that endeared David to so many, including God himself. The story of Saul and David is a perfect example of David’s dedication to God.
Saul was annointed King of Israel by decree of God and was King when David came onto the scene as a young man. David was being groomed to be King and was clearly superior to Saul in many ways. David was a better leader, fighter, and a much more Godly man than was Saul at the time. David was also the source of great jealousy for Saul, and in spite of David’s dedication to him, Saul decided that David should die.
To meet that end, Saul attempted to kill David on several occasions. Twice he hurled his spear at David, and twice he missed. He attempted to kill David through military means by placing David in no win situations. David responded by winning anyway. Finally, the attempted murders sent David hiding in the hills and caves of the area, and even unto the enemies of Israel at one point. David remained true to his religious destiny of becoming King of Israel, but he surely could not see how it was possible.
That is the true nature of our journey with God. His plan is often far more complicated than we can imagine, and so we sometimes lose our Faith. David did not. Not only did David have Faith in God, but he also refused to take out Saul several times when he had the chance. David was just behind Saul inside of a cave without Saul’s knowledge, and he could have easily killed him and ascended the throne of Israel. Instead, he took a part of Saul’s robe and showed him he could have killed him. He hoped this would prove to Saul that he was dedicated to him. Then Saul was sleeping in camp as they hunted for David. David could have killed him in his sleep and yet again did not.
Why did David spare Saul and not take his chance to ascend to the throne? The reason is because Saul was considered to be an annointed choice of God because he was King of Israel. David refused to shortcut God’s plan. He instead waited on God’s plan, and let it happen as it would.
As you know, David went on to lead Israel and become the greatest King in their history. Few would argue that David was one of the most God-fearing Christian men to walk the planet.
This story shows us that we should always be patient with God’s Divine intentions for our lives. He can sometimes take his time, but he is always right on time. Have faith and make sure that you keep your head up. God has your back at all times.
