For a lot of people cell phones has become part of their lifestyle. It certainly plays a huge role in terms of communication aspect between people. Sometimes people tend to forget how to use it in public that can certainly affect what others think about them. It is important to take into consideration some cell phone etiquette that will really change the way how you use your cell phone that is up to the standards and norm. This can also make everyone around you appreciate it.

As a cell phone user, we need to be responsible about it by knowing when to use it and when not too. It is sometimes inevitable that cell phone is really needed and turning it off is not an option. This is the situation where in cell phone etiquette comes in. Etiquette is simply taking in consideration about other people.

  • If you are with a group of friends and there is unexpected call, excuse yourself to avoid disrupting the discussion.
  • If you are talking to a friend and your cell phone rings, answer the call but keep it short as possible. It can certainly give an impression you are not interested with the person you are with if you prolong the conversation. If you are on a date, it is best if you disregard unimportant calls because the special someone you are with deserve your undivided attention.
  • If you are in a public place like restaurant, theater, museum or church, it maybe a good idea to put your cell phone on a vibrate mode. Ring tones can certainly be distracting to some people. Other places include wedding, funerals, hospitals and concert halls.
  • Review your office policy if they allow you to use the cell phone during office hours. Being aware of this is certainly a wise career move on your part.
  • It is better not to use the phone when you are driving. Talking and driving at the same time is just as dangerous when you drink and drive. Most countries got a law against the use of cell phone while driving. Although there is now a technology like Bluetooth for hands free use of phone, it is very ideal not to use the phone entirely.
  • Keep your voice down when you are using your phone in public. Cell phones are high tech gadgets that spell clarity so there is no reason to belt out while using it. It is annoying to the people around you and the person on the other end of the line.
  • Remember to respect the privacy of other people. Cell phones have a built in camera that make it easy to take pictures whether furtively or openly. There is no reason snap pictures and post it on social networking sites. Don’t use your mobile phone camera in places where it is prohibited and never take picture without asking for permission.
  • Don’t let the cell phone become a barrier when you are with friends or family. As much as possible, don’t use it when you are with friends or family.
  • Cell phone is often considered as an extension of personal space. Don’t read other people’s messages or use their phone without permission.
  • Never discuss personal matters in public. It is considered as rude.
  • If there is static on the line, apologize to the one you are talking to and offer to call back when you get a better signal. Never make the other person wait or strain to hear the conversation.
