Tips on Negotiating a Salary

Many people find it difficult to discuss salary increase with their employers believing that doing this will create a bad impression on their part. For those employees who are quite apprehensive to demand a higher salary, they can do this simple guideline which can be effective in convincing their bosses:

1. Demand a higher salary which is reasonable enough. Take consideration of your skills, contribution to the company, work dedication, and educational background since all these things will be the factors that will determine if your boss will grant you a salary increase. Mot people commit a mistake of comparing their salary to their colleagues without even realizing that there are many reasons why there is a salary gap between them.

salary2. Never be apologetic. Convince your boss that a salary increase is reasonable. Never appear that the salary increase is a big favor you demand to them. Make your boss feel that he is not doing a favor if he increases your payment, instead, make him feel that doing so is reasonable and you are deserve it.

3. Do not undervalue or overvalue yourself. There is a much greater chance that you will be rewarded with a salary increase only if you really deserve it.

4. Be assertive enough without appearing too pushy. The first thing you must do is be direct to your boss. Cite your reasons why you think that you need an increase in your salary and be honest enough in doing so. It is always possible to appear assertive and at the same time polite.

5. Use a persuasive tone when discussing a salary increase with your employers. Avoid being gibberish which might be perceived by your boss as a sign of low-confidence. There would be a higher possibility of you really believe in yourself that you deserve a raise. But remember overconfidence might backfire, some people commit a mistake by giving their bosses an ultimatum or threats (e.g. leaving the company or transferring to another industry), believing that they provide an indispensable contribution to the company. This strategy is not effective, it would only make you appear big-headed and arrogant, and besides, you might end up losing your job.

6. When talking to your employer, it is a big no-no to cite your colleagues’ salary and compare your payment to what they are receiving. Doing this might give you an impression that you are nosy and quite demanding.

7. Perform your duty and your responsibility. Employers would always try to keep their best workers who provide them with great service and dedication. If you demand a salary increase and your boss thinks that you have contributed your time, effort, and skills for the benefit of the company, it would be most likely for him to view your demand as reasonable.

8. In case that your employer does not rewarded you with a higher payment, never sour-grape since most of them would want to see for themselves on how you perform your work duties before giving you a salary raise.
