Getting a job for the holiday season used to be as easy as heading to the local mall and asking for one. With the current economy, things are not quite as simple as they used to be. Even holiday jobs have become tough opportunities to come by, and it has become more vital than ever that you are prepared before you go looking for one. Still, it is possible to get a great job for the holiday season if you’re willing to put in the work to locate one.
One of the first things that you must do before you go looking for a holiday job is to have your resume in order. Many people make the mistake of thinking that a holiday job will not need a resume. While it’s true that this might be the case for some jobs, for other holiday jobs it could be exactly what causes you not to get the job. Holiday jobs are not just for teens and retirees anymore. Because so many people are out of work, even the normal working class will be looking for these types of jobs. If they have a strong resume, and you do not, then they have a leg up on you before you even begin.
Go outside your typical box in your search for a holiday job this season. While certainly the department stores and typical holiday jobs will be available, they also will be the jobs that are the most hotly contested. Rather than try to butt heads with the hundreds of people in this scenario, head to your local animal shelters as an example. Animal shelters have an increased number of animals that they shelter during the holidays. They often will hire additional help to meet that demand. There are numerous other unique holiday jobs available. Spend some time looking for those jobs and you will save time.
If it is possible, apply for jobs that you would consider staying with after the holiday season is over. This is attractive to many holiday retailers simply because of the mass exodus that occurs after every holiday season. Many employees will be heading back to school, or back to their regular jobs at the end of the holiday season. Because of this, many retailers are left with a short period after the holidays where they have no help. If you can fill that timeslot, then you become much more attractive as a potential holiday employee.
Try to arrange where you are available for any hours. This is easily the most positive thing you can do to get a holiday job. The vast majority of other applicants will not have this to offer a potential employer, and it can get you a job faster than anything. Plenty of flexibility is the biggest asset when it comes to getting holiday employment.
