Should You Start a Business With a Family Member?

There are many reasons to think about starting a business with a partner. It can ensure that there are two creative minds being put to work, and may also help ensure that work gets done with a quicker turnaround time. If you are looking to start a business with a partner, you may have thought about doing it with a family member. Is this really such a good idea though? Here are some things to consider before making the decision to start a business with a family member.

Do You Trust Your Family Member?

One of the most important things to think about is whether or not you trust the family member you are thinking about going into business with. As much as we would all like to think that our family members demand our respect and trust, this isn’t always the case. On the other hand, some of us may be able to trust our family members much more than we ever may be able to trust any friend, neighbor, or other potential business partner. If there is a relationship of trust, then it is acceptable to move forward.

Does the Family Member Have the Knowledge?

It is also important to think about whether the family member has the knowledge which is necessary to run the business that you are planning to start. If you are opening a pizzeria and your family member has never made a pizzeria before, this may not be such a good idea. However, it is important to consider whether or not they know how to make pasta or other items on the menu. This concept can be applied to just about any business. Having equal knowledge, or at least a balance of knowledge, is important. This will ensure that the responsibilities of running the business can be more evenly divided between the two of you.

What is Your Family Member’s Work History Like?

Before making the decision to begin a business with a family member, it is a good idea to think about their work history. You will want to have a business partner who is highly ambitious and motivated. If your family member has bounced from job to job in the past due to their own lack of stability in the work place, this may be a sign that going into business with them is not necessarily the best idea. Overall, this is very circumstantial, however. Some people may fare better in a job that allows them the flexibility of being able to work closely with one business partner to create their own hours and make their own rules.

Starting your own business is a decision that should not be taken too lightly. It is important to put a lot of thought and consideration into how your run business will be run, and who you should run it with. In some cases, it can be a great idea to go into business with a family member. Sometimes, there are other potential business partners out there who would be much more suited for you, however.
