Becoming a good server at your local restaurant is not as hard as you might think. If you want to earn the big tips, and more importantly the repeat customers, then having a plan is a very good idea. The usual tips are a given - fill their drinks, know your menu, be quick and efficient and so on. But what about those servers that always seem to bring in the huge tips? How do they do it? What do they know that you do not know?
One thing they know is how bad servers really are. When you work as a server, you are automatically on the minus side when a table sits down to eat. The reason for this? Because servers have a bad rap. It only takes one bad eating experience for a customer to label all servers as incompetent. It should not be that way, but knowing that it is can actually work in your favor as a server.
Great servers begin each table as though they are serving the Queen of England. They are happy, considerate and more importantly, available. That means they are not leaning against the wall talking on their cell phone, or out back smoking a cigarette. They are right there in case they are needed. Some servers are there too much, and that can be a problem too. Do not stand over the table. Simply make yourself available by being in the general area should they wave you over.
Great servers also consider their customers. Many great servers even ask about food allergies when they first approach the table. This type of attention to detail makes a customer feel appreciated in a big way. Follow up on this important question with the chef to insure that no problems are encountered during the meal.
Another sign of a great server is when they offer the appetizer. When the customer sits down and you get their drink order, you should get the app order as well. This keeps food in front of the customer while they wait, and they will be much less likely to notice delays. This is vital to increasing your tips as a server. Get those appetizers on the table.
Another key to increasing your tips is to get to know your customers. Some customers have no interest in this, and that is okay. Most enjoy a nice comment or two and a compliment. Knowing which customers to shoot the breeze with is important. Usually you can tell because they will engage in conversation that is not related to their order first.
Finally, and most importantly, great servers are honest. When you have a problem in a small business, it is absolutely vital to your tip that you be honest about it. When you have made a mistake as a server, it is even more important. Customers are listening even when you think they are not. Give them an honest answer to their questions, and apologize when you are wrong. Most often, they will understand and still tip you correctly.
Raising your income as a server is not rocket science. The simple fact is, those that make good money are the ones that work at it on every level. Knowing the menu is only part of the battle. You have to know your customers as well.
