1. Find the trend direction. You will notice that the trend can be up or down, or in many cases, holding steady. This is a basic but important detail to consider when it comes to reading stock charts.

2. To get a better hold on the trend direction, use a 20 to 50 day average. If the 20 day average is higher than the 50 day average, the stock is rising. If it is lower, the stock is on the decline.

3. Take a look at the past six to twelve months to determine the price support. This will show you the historical low for any stock that you are thinking about buying. For instance, if a stock continually drops to $50 but goes no longer, you can be relatively confident that this will hold true in the future.

4. On the opposite side of price support you will find price resistance. If a stock continually climbs to $50 but cannot eclipse this mark, you will have found the historical ceiling.

5. When reading stock charts, keep in mind that trends are accurate data accumulated from past results. If a stock is trending upwards, you will want to hold onto it. If it is sliding, you will want to think about your position and whether or not selling would be a good idea.

As you can see, there is a lot that goes into reading stock charts. With that being said, once you learn the basics you will see these charts in an entirely different light. Before you begin to invest in the stock market, you will want to learn how to read stock charts. This will allow you to follow your investments, and also make the right decisions when buying and selling in the future.
