Sales crews are very important to any sales manager, and they are the avenue that will determine whether a sales manager succeeds or not. As a sales manager, how do you motivate your sales crew when you have a big sale around the corner? When you need to produce some big numbers, how do you get them on board with your goals and aspirations? Here are some things to try the next time you have a big sale:
1. The Almighty Dollar - Most sales crews are easily motivated by money, and many are paid via commission. If your sales crew is on commission, then simply showing them what their performance will mean to them and their paycheck is usually enough to motivate them to action. If they are not motivated by this, they probably should not be on your sales team. Take the time to crunch the numbers and break it down into each sale. Let them see what performance can do.
2. Have a contest - Competition brings out the best in most sales teams. Having bragging rights around the workplace has much more value than one might think. If you can, add in incentives that are sure to motivate. Some ideas for incentives include extra vacation time, a day off, a bonus, or even a break from the cleaning duties for the week. Whatever you can provide will help to sweeten the pot, and make your contest more successful.
3. Have a party - Sales is something that is very infectious. If you spend the time to make it into a big deal, then your employees will buy in as well. Blow up some balloons, bring in some cake, and throw in some streamers. Even throw in a little game here and there. The sales crew will like it and the customers will too.
4. Pitch in your infinite talents - If you are sales manager, then it stands to reason that you are the best sales person on the floor. Get out there and help to convert some sales. Train your employees in the best way to convert that cold customer into a sale. Actually work the floor during the sale and challenge your employees to beat you. You are the leader, and you must lead for the employees to follow you. Show them how it is done and then watch the magic that follows.
5. Ask for their help - Most people want to please their Boss. If you are genuine in your request for help from them, then most people will respond to your request. Explain exactly what you need to get, and why you need to get it. Most employees that feel involved and invested in the company are much more likely to perform well. Allow them to be “in the know” at all time possible.
