Five Qualities Every Top Manager Must Have

Being a top manager is not an easy job. Top managers are constantly called upon to set the example, and to drive their employees to similar greatness. If you want to be a top manager, you have to be able to reproduce your own results. There are a number of outstanding qualities that all top managers seem to share, but there are five that all top managers have without exception.

Empathy - Empathy is a quality that helps a manager overcome problems that their employees might run into. It allows a manager to put themselves in the shoes of their employees as well as their customers. This ability helps them to make informed, thoughtful decisions and also keeps their employees feeling needed, wanted and appreciated.

Fairness - Any leader has to be fair if they want to be a leader for very long. Fairness is the ability to discern what is right and what is not in a situation. Doing the right thing is not always a popular thing, and a leader who is fair never flinches. Communicating fairness is also about treating everyone equally, and with a similar demeanor.

Firmness - While a top manager is always fair, they are also capable of being firm. Firmness does not mean being hateful or overbearing. It means that they are clear and direct with their expectations, and the enforce them equally across the board. If you are firm with your employees, then it gives them an expectation to aspire to. If you are not firm, then you will lose control quickly.

Integrity - Your integrity is the number one quality you must have as a top manager. If you are unable to keep your word in business, then you lose all footing with your clients and your employees. Though some of the things on this list are somewhat flexible, your integrity should never be. If you promise something you should always try your very best to deliver just what you said. If you can not, then you need to own up to the error, and do what is needed to fix the situation.

Energy - Finally, you must have loads of energy if you are to be a top manager in any business or venture. Top managers spend hours working with both clients and training employees, and they have to have the energy to put across the brand with confidence and excitement. It is sometimes necessary to put in long hours and lots of extra work to accomplish this, but energy will help you through the trials of the job.
