As the owner of your small business, perhaps online or just home based business that serves the community of their wants and needs, you are more than just the manager. Aside from being the owner, you are sometimes the employee, the janitor, the security guard, wholesaler and a lot of things. Sometimes, this multi-tasking is just too much for some that they sometimes give up really easy on their home based or small business.

But as a staunch supporter of home based and small businesses, I think it’s really a bad idea to give them up because of these tasks because your business can be a lot more if you want to make it big. As an owner of a business, for sure you already have heard of accounting and probably you are already doing that yourself. Someone can just grab your books and do the accounting for a fee, but you just can’t hire a paid accountant as you would like to keep the business afloat nowadays. Read on and see what are the softwares that you can consider to have peace of mind when it comes to accounting.
Office Accounting 2007 – created by Microsoft Corporation. As of this writing, this is the most powerful accounting software created by Microsoft. If you already have MS office as your basic software, this nifty addition will not hut you at all. The looks and the feel of this software is the same if you’re working at a combination of MS Word and MS Excel. Its online connectivity is also great for business that also has an online shop. Using this tool, you can update your eBay listing and PayPal account. Speaking of accounts, you’ll be able to track your banking transactions with banks that are partnered with Microsoft Corporation in this software which are practically thousands. Now that’s just for the free version. If you go for the advanced you’ll even have something stronger such as inventory, currency converter and access for multiple users.
QuickBooks – probably the most popular of them all. Very easy to use and the starter edition, which is free, could be the only thing that you will need for an accounting software. You can track the money that goes in and out of your business. I think this has become a very popular tool among small business as this can be used up to 20 users, still free of charge. The only difference between the free and the pro is the number of people who can access the software. When you have the Pro edition, thousands can actually use the software at the same time.
TurboCash – The name sounds cheesy compared to other tools but its usability cannot be laughed at. This is an open-source software so it’s free in any edition. It’s constantly updated and being worked on by software developers, who in their spare time want to make the world better by creating a better accounting software. The only downside is you’ll have to figure out any problem yourself if something goes wrong. But if you’re a techie this shouldn’t be any problem.

Great article! There are a couple of things I would add. You should mention that venerable package Simply Accounting as well.
But small business does not necessarily mean simple business. An entrepreneur may have several locations and several companies. You should also consider internet accounting services that let you log into your system from anywhere with an internet connection, such as Net Suite.
