The Top Five Animated Cartoon Cats Of All Time

The lovely kitty cat has long been a very important part of our cartoon landscape, and many of them are more famous than even the most popular dogs. Even the most avid dog lovers have to admit that the animated cartoon cats assembled here can at least give them a run for their money. Here are the top five animated cartoon cats of all time as voted on by…me:

5. Felix The Cat - While Felix might be one of the more famous cartoon cats on the planet, he slides in at number five on my list as I was quite young when he was the king of animated cats. Felix is among the oldest cartoon cats out there, and is still to this day one of the most popular images on gifts from t-shirts to bookbags. Felix has been around since 1919.

4. Garfield - Jim Davis created this affable cartoon cat back in 1978 and he has become nothing less than a cultural family icon. Along with his doggie pal Odie, Garfield has been the cat that holds up a mirror to cat owners all across the world. The coolest thing about Garfield is that he always has something new to say, as Davis has opened him up to everyday problems that we all face. Though he is a pampered, spoiled, and sometimes downright odious cartoon cat, we love Garfield anyway. (Much like our real life kittys)

3. Heathcliff - Heathcliff predated Garfield, but not by much. Like Garfield, he is a fat little cartoon cat that has a penchant for all things surrounding his own pet satisfaction. Orange with black stripes, Heathcliff was the first cartoon cat that explored the emotions that a cat might have outside of the common. Irritated, happy, sad, and every emotion in between have all been paraded for Heathcliff fans around the world. Heathcliff also has an adorable girlfriend named Sonja.

2. Sylvester the Cat - This Looney Tunes classic cartoon cat has become one of the most popular of all cartoon characters and with good reason. From his hilarious lisp to his futile chase of the adorable Tweety Bird, Sylvester the Cat has entertained generations of cartoon cat fans of every age. While the chases with Tweety Bird are hilarious and certainly make for fantastic laughs and fun, the real fun begins when you pair up Sylvester with the indominatable Speedy Gonzalez. Sylvester the Cat sits at number two on my list, though a huge number of folks would probably have him at the top spot. As for me, I reserve that spot for the cartoon cat that never wins anything.

1. Tom (From Tom and Jerry) - Poor Tom. From Jerry the mouse, to the junkyard dog, Tom can not catch a break. This cartoon cat has made a career out of losing to the little mouse Jerry. What is amazing is that we find ourselves actually cheering for Tom to catch him now and then. He seems so pitiful running all over the place and getting hurt. The classic scenes between Tom and Jerry are the best cartoons of all time, with the possible exception of The Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote. Tom has never caught that mouse, but he has caught the hearts of people the world over with his mischievous exploits alongside his rodent buddy.
