Teaching Your Toddler Basic Drawing Concepts

Teaching your toddler to draw is not as tough as it might seem. Toddlers are remarkably attentive when it comes to things like drawing and artistic creativity. Just spending the time with them is usually enough to ensure that they are off and running in the world of art. Still, there are some specific things you can do to give them a head start on basic drawing concepts.

One of the first lessons you want to teach your toddler is the concept of line drawing. Putting lines together to make shapes is the most basic thing you can teach your toddler. This will not only help them with drawing skills, but it will also help them to learn shapes and how they relate to one another.

Another great lesson is to teach your toddler how to add details. Sit them down with a piece of paper and crayons and have them draw your house. Do not interfere and let them draw it all by themselves. Then once they are done give them a ton of praise. Then ask them to come outside and look at the house with you. Bring the picture along, and have them compare the two. Ask them if they want to add any specific things to make the picture even better. They always will. The benefit to this is that they start to learn to look closer at those things that they are drawing.

If you really want to have some artistic fun with your toddler, sit them down and teach them about perspective. That is, show them how to draw something three dimensional. A box is the easiest lesson, and if you spend time working with them, they will get the concept eventually. This will do wonders for their drawing skills at such a young age, and they will likely begin to incorporate it into their drawings in the future.

Shading is another drawing concept that your toddler is fully capable of grasping. Sit them down and draw an apple. Then set up an apple with a light source nearby. Turn on the light source and show them the shadows and shades that appear. Then ask them to copy those shades on their apple. You will be shocked at how easy the concept is at that age.

The biggest key in teaching toddlers basic concepts of drawing is to have them spend plenty of time both drawing and inspecting what they draw. The time spent discussing what the drew is just as important as the drawing itself. We often underestimate what toddlers can understand. When it comes to drawing and creativity, the average toddler has a very large capacity for learning.

Spend at least one hour every other day drawing and learning together. Let them teach you how to draw things as well. This will give them confidence in what they are doing, and spur them forward in their search for drawing ability. Creativity will come when the toddler is ready to expand, but in the meantime allow them to draw what they love.
