All your Friends Got One
This is easily the worst reason in the world to get a tattoo. Tattoos are not something that you can wake up and rub off with some soap and water. Friends will pressure you in a heartbeat, but it is a bad reason to get a tattoo.
You Think It Makes You Cool
The truth is, you will be the same person you were before you got the tattoo. Getting a tattoo will not change who you are in the least. You will just have a permanent reminder of trying to attempt to be cool.
You Want to Cover A Different Tattoo
For the love of God, do not cover an old tattoo with a new and improved one unless the tattoo artist knows what they are doing. I knew a girl that wanted to cover up the word “Brad” on her shoulder and ended up with a tattoo all the way down her back. Covering tattoo work is one thing, but make sure it is a professional. It is not the best reason to get a tattoo.
You Want to Get Back at Mom, Dad, Boyfriend…
If you want revenge, do not mark it all over your body. As soon as you get that “Burn in Hell, Josh” tattoo written on your back you will get back together with him. The list of people who got tattoos and regretted them is long, and the vast majority of them were from a group just like this.
You Want to Be Like Someone
Again, trying to be someone that you are not is a bad idea. That idea becomes worse when you are mixing it with permanent ink on your body. Getting a tattoo is about expression and celebration of self. It should never be about trying to be someone else. Not only will it not work, it will make you more miserable in the end.
These are all bad reasons to get tattoos, and you should consider them if you are getting one. The body art business is a wonderful medium, and a quality tattoo for the right reasons can be a great source of pleasure. The biggest thing is that you have to do it for all the right reasons.
